Asus Eee PC 1005HR

Since the launch of Microsoft Windows 7, there has been a steady stream of new netbooks from everyone.  The problem is that with every new model, there’s only a couple of minor changes.  The new Asus Eee PC 1005HR has the same internals as all the netbooks out there, except the screen.  The 1005HR has a 10.1 screen with the resolution of 1366×768.   That’s right.  This screen is capable of displaying hi-def video at 720P.

Other than that, there’s not that much difference from every other netbook out there.

The key to purchasing the right netbook is to know what you’ll be using it for and how much you want to spend.  Most people buy netbooks thinking it is a small and cheap laptop computer.  Yes it’s very mobile and the price is low compared to a regular laptop, but it also does less.  You can’t really play games on netbook or expect high performance from the Intel Atom N280 CPU.  It’s best to evaluate all the different brands of netbooks of out there and determine which will fit your needs.

Will I replace my 1000H for a newer model with a better screen?  Nope.  If anything, I’ll get a new full size laptop instead.

It’s only a matter of time before our little Eee grew up.  The Asus Eee PC 1101HA is an 11.6 inch netbook with a bigger screen and higher screen resolution of 1366 x 768.  The Eee PC 1101HA is part of the Seashell family, so it’s thin, sleek, and lightweight.

Keep in mind that this Eee does not run on the standard N series Intel Atom N280 CPU.  The Z520 is a little slower than the N280.

So here’s what you’re getting.

Intel Atom N450

Intel announced that there will be a new Atom processor to replace the netbook popular Atom N270.  In my opinion, it’s about time.  Sure, they released the Atom Z series.  But that’s just a more efficient N270.  I like the N270, but I always thought it could use a little more power.  On my Eee PC 1000H, running a few tabs in Firefox will give the CPU some trouble.  Flash video requires the majority of the CPU cycles.

The new Atom N450 will push the tiny CPU to the 2 GHz range.  That’s a much needed increase for the highly efficient platform.  Future netbooks will benefit greatly.  Along with more power, the new CPU incorporates the GPU and memory controller on one smaller chip.  The new platform, code name “Pine Trail”, will process information more efficiently and increase battery life.  The newer chip will be easier to keep cool and easier to fit into smaller netbooks.

As we move to a more green society, expect a lot from the little Atom.  You can already see it in action in form of nettops.  A nettop is a netbook in a desktop form factor like the Eee Top.  It’s basically an Eee PC with a 15.4 inch touchscreen for $500.  Click here for more details. As for me, I like my Q9650.  It’s fast.
